About the event

Not your Grandmother's Diabetes - Debunking the Myths of Diabetes

More than 1 in 3 Americans now have pre-diabetes, and 8 out of 10 don't know they have it!

Elizabeth Mayne will share her journey with Diabetes, starting with a surprise diagnosis in 2014 amidst divorce and career changes. She will talk about the twists and turns that came with trying to manage the disease and the technological advances that have made all the difference.

In addition, learn about the types of Diabetes, common misconceptions about the disease, the striking data showing the prevalence in our county, and the physical, emotional, and financial costs of diabetes. Elizabeth will share tools you can use today to understand and reduce your own risk of developing the disease.

About Our Speaker

Elizabeth Mayne is a proud born-and-raised Duluthian. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of MN Duluth in Psychology and Communications. After working in the human services field in Duluth for a few years, Elizabeth decided she wanted to try her hand at “Big City Living” and moved to Minneapolis. While there, she returned to school to earn a degree in graphic design from Hennepin Technical College. Realizing "there's no place like home," Elizabeth and her husband moved back to Duluth to start a family in 2001.

In 2004, Elizabeth used her knowledge, skills, and creativity to start a graphic design and marketing company, Mayne Design. Over the past 18 years, she has worked with hundreds of organizations of all sizes to hone their brand, create unique designs, and implement effective branding and marketing campaigns.

In August 2013, life events prompted Elizabeth to put Mayne Design on the back burner and join the Head of the Lakes United Way team. In 2018, she became their Marketing Director, which was a part-time position. Elizabeth realized she had found the perfect employment combination – she could continue to share the important message of United Way balanced with a return to Mayne Design.

However, 2020 arrived with ideas of its own. With Covid keeping her at home full time, Elizabeth decided to take a chance by stepping down at United Way and embracing Mayne Design as her full-time gig. Two years later, she is happy to report that Mayne Design is thriving!

Elizabeth is an active member of the local business community. She is a founding board member of the Empowered Women’s Network, and the Northland Business Connections networking group. In addition, she is a Chamber Ambassador for the Hermantown Area Chamber of Commerce.

Elizabeth lives in Duluth Heights with her three children, aged 17-20, who are busy pursuing lives of their own with two in college, and her baby is a high school senior! Elizabeth enjoys spending time with family and friends, getting outdoors, Broadway theater, traveling, and dotting on her three fur babies, including two happy golden retrievers, and an extremely entitled cat.
