The Heart of a Woman: Prevention of heart disease

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the Northland. Prevention is key. As a cardiologist, Dr. Katie Benziger will tell us what we need to do to prevent heart disease. She will talk about knowing your numbers, like blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and weight, and the importance of routine physical activity and diet. She'll also discuss more rare causes of heart disease in women, like valve disease and pregnancy-related risk factors. 

About Our Speaker

Dr. Catherine Benziger currently serves as the Medical Director of Heart and Vascular research for Essentia Health (EH) and is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She maintains a clinical practice that focuses on cardiovascular disease prevention and women's cardiovascular disease as a non-invasive cardiologist. Katie was voted a “Top Doctor” in Minnesota for cardiology in 2019, 2021, and 2022. In addition, she mentors students during the summer and through the cardiology clerkship at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She is actively involved in the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology, both locally and nationally. Katie is also the principal investigator for various clinical trials, including the patient-centered outcomes research network (PCORNet) trials ADAPTABLE and PREVENTABLE. In her spare time, Katie enjoys skiing, snowboarding, running, biking, and spending time outside with her husband and 2 kids, Theo and Marit.

MEAL SERVICE: Our venue allows us to bring in outside food, so we invite you to BYOL - Bring Your Own Lunch! Coffee and water will be available. If desired, you may bring your own food and beverage, such as a bagged lunch or take-out meal. Dessert will be provided for all by our January Dessert Sponsor.
